Check out our new blog!

Super English has a new blog! Make your way over to superenglishsuratthani.wordpress.com, where you will find our new blog, along with all our previous blog entries and pages. Why the change? Our current blog host site, blog.com, seems to have a thing for snatching up our published blog posts and dumping them down some black hole in cyber space. We wish we could stay at our current blog address, but with so many published posts [...]

Return from the October break…

Last week was the first official whole week of school since our October vacation. We returned to school on a Thursday to ease ourselves back into the routine of teaching but as I said, last week was the first full week of teaching. There’s always a certain amount of time that must pass to get yourself into the appropriate mental state, an adjustment period rather, for any new routine. Just as it takes a few [...]

Funny Translations

bad translation

I hadn’t been in Thailand long before I started noticing funny translations all over the place. Sometimes it is just a small mistake that makes something funny, like “rice ant pork” instead of “rice and pork.” Other times a terrible spelling can make a translation funny, such as “singarporsrink” instead of the well-known “Singapore Sling.” Then there are the translations that make absolutely no sense, like this menu I saw at a restaurant in Bangkok [...]

The Puppies of New Thida

image (2)

If you’ve ever been to Thida, you know there are dogs that seem to roam around wherever they please. Through the middle of the school, in the cafeteria, around the snack bar; they basically run the place. Well, a few weeks ago, we found out about a new addition to the Thida dog family — puppies!! 4 adorable, fluffly, chunky puppies.  These puppies live in a large dog cage, behind the New Thida cafeteria. After [...]

Thida: Sports Day

Sports day is quickly approaching and for the past couple of weeks all of the students have been preparing. You’re probably thinking, “Oh that’s great! There’s a lot of emphasis on sports and exercise at Thida!” Wrong! As far as I can tell, the students are practicing to march, and only march. The students have been stomping around the school with marching batons and a Thai teacher tooting a whistle at them as they step [...]

Massaman Battle to the Death: Settled?

So, after an organized tasting between both restaurants, we are at a stalemate. We currently have 6 votes for the Muslim restaurant and 6 votes for the Rajutid restaurant. Last Saturday Peter treated those of us who wanted to participate to a lunch, to determine which massaman restaurant was in fact the best.  We met at the Rajutid restaurant for our first tasting and they brought their A game. It was by far the best [...]

Thai snacks – Lays, local style

Lays Mieng Kam

Thais are serious about their snacks. 10:30 am every day is snack break at Thida. Every kid in the school rushes to the canteen to buy absurdly sweet treats and bags of strange meat. After school, you see Thais everywhere chowing down on meat sticks and fruit shakes. And upon stepping foot into any 7-Eleven or Family Mart, you’ll encounter rows of candy, chips, sweet rolls, and hot dog-like mystery foods. I personally have always [...]

Got Milk?

image

Every Monday at Thida all the MEP (Mini English Program) teachers facilitate clubs. Each club has a theme – games, videos, writing, art, etc. After recess, the students line up and disperse into their designated clubs. This Monday, we were told by a Thai teacher, “Wait 10 minutes. The students go for milk.” Nobody was really sure what that meant, but we didn’t mind 10 free minutes in the office, so we headed back to [...]

Massaman Roti Battle: Counterpoint

Jade has done some great services to us all by offering up the Surat Soup Challenge and then giving a lengthy, detailed breakdown of Massaman Roti, quite possibly the best dish in Thailand. However, as he pointed out, this is a dish that incites passion among the SE teachers, and I feel compelled to respond to his slanderous accusations toward Rajutid Massaman Roti. Where to even begin? Let’s start with the sauce consistency. Jade did [...]

Massaman Roti Battle to the Death (not really)

There is a disagreement between teachers (Super English teachers at least) about who in Surat has the best Massaman Roti. What is Massaman Roti? Well, it might just be the most delicious dish you’ll find in Thailand. Massaman is a curry thought to have either been brought by Arab traders to the south of Thailand or by a Persian envoy to the north of Thailand. Either way, what is agreed upon is that it is [...]

Diving in Thailand

One of the great things about living in Surat is its proximity to a lot of the desirable destinations of Thailand. I just got home off of a night boat from Koh Tao. Since it was a long weekend, thanks to Buddha, I decided to go get my advanced open-water diving certification. I managed to dive 30meters (almost 100 feet), swim through a wrecked WWII warship, and see some sea turtles. I’d highly recommend any [...]

Going Green in Surat #1 – One Week No Trash Challenge

One day while traveling in Vietnam over the break, Kristin and I rented a motorbike and went cruising on the roads around Sapa. We drove to the top of Tram Ton Pass, the area’s highest road-accessible point, and stopped to enjoy the view. While we were looking out over the other side, a guy pulled up on a bicycle. He’d ridden a LONG way up. We offered to take a picture for him and chatted [...]

Surat Soup Challenge!

tom-kah-soup

Hi all! This is my first blog post after being here for about 7 months. Either way, let’s get to it. I want to put out the challenge to all of you Super teachers to find the best soup in Surat. Once you’ve found a solid candidate post it in the Super English Facebook group or as a reply to this blog post. I think the facebook page will get more views, though. Include: what [...]

On the Arrival of New Teachers

Mmm, spring-time! The climate’s warming here and the rain has all but stopped, leaving steamy humidity which begins ramping up around 8 a.m. It’s time again for folks to begin arriving from abroad. After having been here for one round of arrivals and now again for a second, I felt compelled to comment. We tend to show up here, in the middle-south of Thailand, and we can’t know until later how visible we are as [...]

Eating Snake in Hanoi (Oh Boy!)

DSC04434

Y’all will probably never believe it, but I ate a live beating snake heart in Vietnam.  It all started when my friends from Portland and I were walking to the bus station in Hanoi.  We were stopped on the way by a drunken Vietnamese man whose birthday was that day.  He wanted us to drink Bia Hoi (brewed daily Vietnamese beer) with him and when we said we were on our way to the bus station, he literally walked over, [...]

Hit the Road, Jack

songthaew

Friday was our last day of the school year at Thida. It was a fun day, filled with games, fruit-giving, and “thank-you-teacha-goodbye”s. I have enjoyed this last semester a lot. I had so much fun teaching the 3rd graders and I’m looking forward to moving up to 4th grade with them next year. But as much as I’ve liked teaching, I’m super stoked about the 2+ month vacation I’m now staring in the face! This [...]

Laundry in Surat

washer

Around Surat there are a jillion different places to get your laundry done. If you drive down Karunrat Road, you will probably see 10 different laundry places in less than 3 minutes.  There is definitely no shortage of options when it comes to getting those smelly, sweat-drenched clothes of your fresh and clean. Since new teachers will be arriving soon, I thought it would be a good time to share a few of our favorite [...]

Sticker EXPLOSION!

stickers2

I’m sure most of us have at least vague memories of elementary school Valentine’s Day parties growing up. I remember the ‘Ninja Turtles’ and ‘My Little Ponies’ valentine cards that every kid brought to school to stuff into the boxes we’d crafted in the preceding days. Every kid was required to give every other kid a valentine, but you wanted to give the coolest ones to your best friends, and of course, you had to [...]

School Supply Store

SAMSUNG

Every day when I drive down Talad Mai, I see an office/school supply store. I’ve noticed it for a long time and decided to stop and check it out the other day. I’ve been wanting to get some magnets or tape to post flashcards on the board and a new notebook. At Thida you can buy notebooks, pencils, pens, colored pencils, etc, but this store has a wayyy better selection and a lot of supplies [...]
